  • Google Calendar ICS

Second and final event of the 2020 songSLAM Festival Weekend.

This recital is a continuation of our Biennial partnership with world renowned mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and the Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar and is centered around the theme of family, in all of its incarnations.

Performers are Stephanie Blythe and pianist Kayo Iwama with Fall Island alumni artists soprano Lucy Fitz Gibbon and pianist Ryan MacEvoy McCullough

This recital will feature the world-premiere of a new song cycle by Alan Louis Smith entitled Surfing the Thin Places.

From the score: “The 'thin places' are where the temporal and the eternal seem infinitely close. Within the grief of saying “the long goodbye” to my mom, while watching her physical body metamorphose, I felt a thrill for her anticipation of what her profound religious faith says lay ahead for her. These poems and these songs spring from the incredible, irreplaceable experience of saying goodbye, and watching my mother “surf the thin places” in her hospital bed, arriving on “the other side,” which, according to her faith sent her to the most beautiful and radiant welcome-home ever.”

Tickets are $25 pre-purchased and $35 at the door. Tickets will go on sale HERE on November 18th.
